As you know, 2009 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of his book, Origin of Species. While Universities and the popular media are celebrating The Year of Darwin, promoting his anti-biblical worldview, we think it is time to let the world know – Darwin was wrong!

Calvary Chapel Kauai will be rebroadcasting a Creation Science Seminar on November 20-21st. This seminar will air live at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa on November 13-14 and can be viewed here. CC Kauai will be rebroadcasting the video feed starting Friday night, November 20th at 6:30 PM and will end at 9:00 PM. The seminary will resume on Saturday morning at 8:30 AM and run till 3:30 in the afternoon. A $5 lunch will be provided by the Bible College.

This DVD seminar will include presenters from all over the science community. Topics will include: geology, microbiology, sociology. Here is a list of the speakers.

John Baumgardner, Ph.D. in Geophysics, will introduce the conference, revealing that science is now debunking every aspect of Darwin’s hypothesis.

E. Thomas McMullen, Ph.D. in History and the Philosophy of Science, will show that Darwin used creative speculation and unbounded extrapolation in place of the scientific method, and that his approach was the antithesis of good science.

Steve Austin, Ph.D. in Geology, will show that Darwin was profoundly wrong about the origin of the Santa Cruz River Valley in Patagonia, and about the geologic record in general. Darwin’s speculations of slow and gradual biological change were based on the false idea of slow and gradual geologic change.

Marcus Ross, Ph.D. in Paleontology, will point out that while Darwin admitted the fossil record in his day contradicted his theory, he held out hope that future discoveries would come to his rescue. Now, 150 years later, the problem of missing intermediates is even more glaring.

Robert Carter, Ph.D. in Marine Biology, will speak on Darwin’s naïve belief that life is fundamentally simple. Since Darwin’s day, science has revealed life to be so staggeringly complex as to render Darwin’s foundational speculations clearly untenable.

John Sanford, Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and in Plant Genetics, will show that Darwin was wrong about natural selection. Darwin proposed that heritable variation and natural selection account for all biological complexity. But he knew nothing of genetics, of mutations, or, most crucially, of the extreme limitations of natural selection.

Jerry Bergman, Ph.D. in Human Biology, will show that Darwin was wrong about his proposed “Tree of Life” – a diagram purporting to show how all life forms diverged over eons of time from a primordial common ancestor. DNA studies are not supporting well-defined lines of descent among major groups of ancestors as Darwin imagined. The confused and scrambled genomic patterns instead imply a tangled bush. In other words, genetic evidence for common ancestry is missing!

Dr. Charles Ware, President of Crossroads Bible College, will show that Darwin regarded “races” other than his own as inferior and destined for extinction. But DNA studies reveal genetic differences between major people groups are only superficial, smaller than variations within these groups. Genetically, we are one race – the human race.

Robert Carter, Ph.D. in Marine Biology, will return to discuss Darwin’s speculation that humans descended from ape-like ancestors. Contrary to Darwin’s speculations, modern genetic evidence points to a “Mitochondrial Eve” and a “Y-Chromosome Adam” only thousands of years ago, and also to a very recent divergence of the world’s major people groups out of the Middle East.

A Few Bible College Adventures

Kauai is full of adventure, and our students have not had trouble finding it. Please know that the most beneficial thing you can do in helping the students and myself develop the future articles is to
1. fill out the survey here
2. Send us your opinions with scripture or examples from Church History
3. Be nice

Please note, just because we are asking questions that appear to have a critical premise, we are not going to take anyones side in an existing dispute. We don't want to hear your war stories from Calvary Chapel. And we don't want to hear complaints that lack helpful solutions.

Our goal is to collect the results from the survey and then generate a final report. The first article is going to be about the work of the Holy Spirit in the Calvary Chapel movement, and the methods that were fruitful.

We will publicly release the raw data from the survey once we have 250 general responses or 100 Calvary Chapel leader's responses.

I, along with the students participating in this project appreciate the feedback that is being sent in.

Have a blessed day.

Calvary Chapel's Future

Fill the survey out here!

As the Calvary Chapel movement gets older it is interesting to watch the changes that take place and the new concerns that arise. I am not old enough to have seen the Calvary Chapel movement in the early 70's, but I have now been around CC leadership for the last ten years. I have seen enough to know that the future success of Calvary Chapel is not written in stone and some serious conversations need to take place.

Because our focus at the Bible College is on equipping a new generation we often feel like we are at tennis match: on one side looking at the historical foundation of the Calvary Chapel movement, and on the other side strategizing how best to train leaders for the future. Unfortunately I have to confess that I have been critical of Calvary Chapel in the past. I have complained about the things Calvary Chapel is not doing rather than appreciate all the good things that it has done. But whether I am an appreciator or complainer, I still am relating to young adults on a daily basis. And I feel the pressure to be fruitful today.

I find myself sorting through snippets of Calvary's history; evaluating what is of greatest worth to pass onto these young adults. For a while I was critical of Calvary Chapel's lack of one to one discipleship. I really felt like Calvary was dropping the ball on discipling young believers, and budding leaders. But this last week that critique changed a bit.

I realized the awesome reality of one man (Chuck Smith), modeling biblical church life, sending out hundreds of pastors to plant churches, that in turn saw thousands saved and mature in Christ. It is kind of dumb to take shots at what is missing in Chuck's discipleship model when he is the leader of 1500 CC church plants. You go and get your own 1500 churches and then you can take your shots. (I may regret saying that later in this article.)

Chuck's model has been simple; teach the Word in a home Bible study. As it grows rent a store front. If you keep growing, buy a big facility, start a bookstore, radio station, K-12 school, and maybe even add a Bible College. This model has been copied time and time again. It has been duplicated so many times that it almost seems unspiritual and boring. But lets assume that it is a God inspired model that served the first generation of Calvary Chapel church plants well. There are a lot of Calvary Chapels that have followed this model and done incredibly well. A lot of people have gotten saved, discipled, and equipped through this model.

But then, us young folks come on the seen and see this incredible model fully developed, and we begin to poke at the problems. This could be pride, and ingratitude toward those who have laid such a terrific foundation. But at the same time we have to carry the baton in a few years and want to be fully convinced that what we are doing is biblical, and quickened by Spirit.

So we are caught in a precarious position of looking prideful and ungrateful as we ask questions and test the creeds of the first generation. How can we lead a future generation if we have some serious concerns or questions?

With that in mind I intend to write a series of articles that wrestle with the future areas of growth. These articles are based on questions students have asked in the classroom. I am interested in input from all directions. I am by no means the smartest guy in the room. I am only asking questions and posting the ideas I hear and come up with.

There are a few ways that you can add, disagree, contend, challenge. I will be creating a survey that accompanies each question. You can also e-mail me at joshturansky (at) gmail (dot) com. You can follow me on Twitter at @JoshTuransky. Or you can facebook me.

I really want to hear from current leaders in Calvary Chapel, but I also want to hear what young adults are saying. Also, those of you outside the CC movement; I want to hear your thoughts as well. Please engage whether your thoughts are fully developed or not. There are young adults being discipled at this Bible College and at a dozen other campuses that represent future leaders. Your input could really benefit their development.

Here are some of the questions I want to ask:
- If the success of Calvary Chapel came from a work of the Holy Spirit, and not a method, but we don't have that same movement of the Holy Spirit today, what methods are we to follow?

- Why did Calvary Chapel find so much success in suburban areas, but there has not been as much success in urban/inner city areas?

- What is Calvary Chapel's philosophy of missions?

- Why does Calvary Chapel tend to be anti-intellectual, but rely heavily on seminary scholars in sermon preparation?

- What leadership role does the Pastor's Conferences play in the movement, and why does Calvary Chapel have the same guys teach year after year at most of these conferences?

- Why does Calvary Chapel tend to be exclusive from the rest of Christianity in America? Or in the positive; "Who outside of Calvary Chapel do we co-labor with?"

- Why does Calvary Chapel find Acts as a model for church life, but an Old Testament leader (Moses) as a model for church government? This question has been asked and answered in other places, but I want to aggregate those answers here.

- Is it a false perception to see that the older Calvary Chapel leaders who have been around since "the Tent" days reach tenure, and join the "Good Ol' Boys Club"? Maybe this is a question about accountability.

If you want to have input on these questions please start by filling out the survey linked here. I would ask that you join with me in pray for the family described in this letter. Also, as strange as it may be, would you consider becoming a missionary? Such a strange request accompanied by such tragic news, but I still ask. Would you consider God's call on your life?

Thank you for your continued prayers, support, encouragement and kindness towards us and the pastors. We are preparing for the beginning of next semester, which begins in three weeks. We are on a short visit to the States for ministry meetings, work and a visit to family. While here are find ourselves sorting through a most difficult and trying situation. It involves our personal and dear friends on the missionary compound we live in Nairobi.

Last week our neighbor and friend Frank Toewes (Missionary pilot with Africa Inland Missions) died in a plane accident while flying over the Kibera slum. He leaves behind his wife Tiffany, and 4 children (youngest boy Lowen aged 5, and three girls: Teegan aged 7, Tabitha aged 10, Alene aged 13). Lowen, a Kenyan orphan adopted by the Toewes, has now lost his second father. Lowen and our son Isaac are best friends.

In the plane was another friend and neighbor, Ryan Williams (Missionary aircraft mechanic, also serving with AIM). Ryan suffered burns over 70% of his body, but survived the crash. We were just notified this morning that he died a few hours ago after suffering for a week. He leaves behind his wife Dawn, and 4 children (youngest girl Cloe 3, and three boys: Seth aged 4, Levi aged 6, and Caleb aged 8). Cloe, a Kenyan orphan adopted by the Williams, has not lost her second father. Levi and our son Isaac are dear friends and playmates.

We are in shock. Our many dear families and friends on our compound are in shock. The entire missionary community in Nairobi is effected.

We ask for your fervent and abiding prayers for Tiffany and Dawn...and their many children. And for everyone involved in the loss of these two men of God, who "followed hard after the Lord". And for us in our own personal grief as friends of both families. Marcia, in particular, is greatly and deeply effected by this, for all the obvious reasons.

More information and "how to help" can be found at http://www.aimair.org/

Thank you and God bless you

Paul (& Marcia)
You can find more info on Paul and Marcia at http://www.disciplesupport.org/

Keep in touch...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pTGAfv24C5g/SjfWZtGdqxI/AAAAAAAAAE4/kEuYvdwm4Z8/s200/Karli+and+Cassie+taken+by+marilyn.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5347978819617532690" />
Starting Bible College is a new season in life. Usually it means leaving home, leaving friends, and leaving a home church. This change can be very exciting for students who have been eagerly awaiting their independence, but it can also be a very lonely time away from those who the student loves most. The Bible College experience is wonderful, but it is so important to maintain these older relationships.

Every semester we are encouraging our students to keep in touch with their core group of friends, family and church back home. These relationships are so valuable. These are people are really the ones who will be able to see spiritual growth and maturity in the student over time. These are the people that will most likely support the student in future missions endeavors. These are the people that will attend their wedding and call to encourage them down the road.

It is seems to be the tendency of 18-21 year olds to forget these important connections and move onto new relationships. It is our job as a discipleship staff to remind the students to keep in touch.

If you are a student here are three things you need to consider:

1. God placed very important people in your life during your high school years that are either a support network to fall back on or a mission field to share your testimony with.

2. Your home church is going to miss you. Maybe the leadership will miss you. But we know that lives in your church have a vested interest in your spiritual growth and are hoping you return at some point.

3. Your family cares about the changes in your life. Even if your family is not committed in their faith, they are watching to see your commitment and are considering how God is working in your life.

Paul the Apostle was a good example of someone who stayed in contact with old friends. He was constantly writing letters, and visiting established relationships. He showed a great deal of care for his friends. If you are a college student, we encourage you to keep in touch with the people God has place in your life.

Calvary Chapel Senior Pastor's Conference Recap

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pTGAfv24C5g/Si9n28vEOHI/AAAAAAAAAEw/P7qFOgmWk7c/s200/DSC00031.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345605476426201202" />
Just got back from a great Calvary Chapel Pastor's Conference in Murrieta, CA... I was really encouraged by a number of components. It probably was the best conference I have seen yet.

Let me give you my personal context for that high and lofty praise. I worked at the Bible College/Conference Center from 1999-2007. I was at every Senior Pastor's Conference during this time. But my insider perspective goes beyond attending the conferences. I was a part of the Murrieta Bible College ministry up until 2007. We were directly connected to the leadership of the CC movement, growth and decisions that were made at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. We were one concentric circle out from the decisions being made by CC Costa Mesa and CCOF. So needless to say I have seen the good, bad and ugly of the senior pastor's conferences. (Yes, every once in a while, it can get ugly.)

Here are a couple of things that stood out at this conference:

The concept of the movement aging and the need for young leadership was repeatedly spoken of. "We have to raise up the young guys", was said at least ten times by various speakers. And a glance around the room showed how true this statement was. It was amazing to see so much grey hair. Many of the trials that were shared with me by pastor's were tales of sickness and bodies falling a part. The evidence of an aging movement was evident in the physical appearance of so many pastor's. It was good to hear this theme being emphasized. The question stands: "how do they intend to raise up these young leaders?" (The Bible College should be a part of that answer, but I will leave that for another post.)

Another really beautiful time was the afterglow lead by Brian Brodersen. There was no break after Pastor Joe Focht's teaching. Chuck just turned the time right over to Brian to lead the afterglow. This meant that more pastor's stuck around.

The beauty of the afterglow came from Brian's leadership against the backdrop of two weird incidents. At one point a man stood up and challenged Brian to share about a controversial change of leadership that had taken place at Costa Mesa a few weeks earlier. Brian was stunned initially, but held back from destroying an individual who was out of line. Instead Brian directed anyone one with questions to discuss it with him privately. It is amazing how simple and easy the Bible's solutions for conflict are. If this gentleman, who challenged Brian, would have heeded scripture he would have had a much more productive evening. Oh well, hopefully he learned.

Later on another gentlemen stood up to "rebuke" the pastor's who did not have the gift of tongues. He was harshly suggesting that all Calvary Chapel pastor's should speak in tongues. He was point to the lack of the gift of tongues as the reason for Calvary Chapel loosing its relevancy in culture. Again, Brian redirected the afterglow time without verbally destroying a guy who was out of line. Brian also shared about the real need to not just believe in the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, but to actual obey and live out that doctrine. It really was handled well, and at the end of the evening the person of the Holy Spirit had his way in glorifying the headship of Jesus over the church.

There are really good things happing in Calvary Chapel missions, Calvary Chapel radio, publishing, and Bible Colleges. I had so many conversations with pastor's and ministry leaders that were taking new ground and venturing out in new arenas of faith. It was so exciting to see and hear all that God is doing.

Here is short list of ministries that I ran into while I was there:
Bob Hoekstra - Living in Christ Ministries
Calvary Chapel Bible College Peru
Brad Hall - CC Central Maui
Damian Kyle - CC Modesto
Mike and Joe Focht - CC Philly
Alan Leigh - CC Wahiwah

Family Camp

The Bible College had a great weekend at the CCK Family Camp. This annual camp takes place at the beginning of May each year. Over 80 people were signed up for the camp. It was a great time of fellowship, fun, fishing, and other crazy activities. The Bible College staff/students cooked the breakfast on Saturday. It was awesome.

The men in the Homiletics class were the guest speakers for the four sessions at the retreat. Here are some pictures from the week.

KBC to Hosts Summer Camps in June and July

Kauai Bible College will be hosting three Summer Camps for youth in June and July. We are excited to have 20 full time student on campus, 4 interns and an incredible staff.

We have add a few new teachers this semester including Ben Vallance from the Calvary Chapel on the South side of the island. He is teaching our apologetics class. So far the students have had nothing but praise for Pastor Ben's teaching. Every student in the class received a copy of the Norm Geisler Apologetics Library on their Logos Bible Software. This is an incredible package that goes along with Ben's awesome teaching.

In other news; the Bible College and church are still pursuing the purchase of a new facility located on the east side of the island. It would be a perfect location for the Bible College. Please pray that God would bless us with this location so that we can continue to grow.

Lastly, if you are interested in interning with the Bible College over the Summer please fill out the internship application on our web site. We are making plans for the Summer now and would love to have an army of interns join us in serving Jesus.

Logos Bible Software Free to all Spring students

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 161px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pTGAfv24C5g/SUm6PmCvXWI/AAAAAAAAADY/B-UEmXv_YW8/s320/2688.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280956815141461346" />
We are really excited about this news!

Starting in the Spring 2009 semester Kauai Bible College will be transitioning from paper textbooks to digital textbooks. Students have now completed two full weeks of classes and are engrossed in their studies. As a staff we have been blown away by this group of students. They are everything that we could hope and pray for: joyful servants ready to embrace life.

We have sent out a letter requesting your financial support over the next 40 days. During this period of time we will be constructing our new women's housing on the church property. The initial phase of construction is estimated to cost us $60,000 - $80,000. This dollar amount will purchase the housing and amenities needed for 16 women. This is an exciting project that we have been planning for the last six months, but, based on some unexpected events with the current women's housing, we are being forced to complete this project faster than we anticipated.

The students are fired up and have already begun to raise money for this project. Within the last five days God provided over $4,000. We have a long way to go to reach our financial target, but we are trusting that God will provide. If you are interested in contributing to this project you can give online or by regular mail: P. O. Box 1990, Kapaa, HI 96746. All donations are tax deductible.

Why do we have only 40 days? This last week the owner of our current women's dorm surprised us with a 45 day notice. She informed us that she had signed a lease with a new tenant and wanted us out of the house by October 25th. As much as this was a surprise to us, and the complete opposite of what she had verbalized to us on the phone a month ago, we believe God has been preparing us for this move and has been giving us vision for new Women's housing.

The new women's housing is going to be a similar style to the men's, with Luxury Safari Tents, and an island safari genre of design. If you have not yet seen pictures of the men's tents please click on this link. As many of you are aware we are only able to construct temporary housing options on the church property until we have the proper permits. The Luxury Safari Tents have been a great short term solution while we work with the county on obtaining these permits.

Back in the Spring semester we had the women of the Bible College swap housing with the men. We asked them to give us feedback on how we could make this style of housing acceptable for female students. Their response was overwhelming. They loved the tents, but asked that we improve the bathrooms, showers, and comfort of the campus. All of these requests are possible. At that time we began to plan a new campus that would suit the women. We have plans to make the tents bigger, with real bathrooms and warm clean showers. We also are going to renovate our kitchen and expand it's capacity so that it is a comfortable dining area and able to cook large meals.

Over the next 40 days we will be posting more information about the move and progress with construction.

In Christ,

Kauai Bible College Team
www.kauaibiblecollege.com

Week 1

Fall Class Schedule

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pTGAfv24C5g/SK-kdQVg8wI/AAAAAAAAABk/b0r0wfKXa4A/s320/d9dbd191d2d11c71273bc1dd4c0b3f14.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237585714163544834" />
Click on the class schedule above to view the courses being taught this Fall.

Please note: we wanted to make this available for students interested. I was expecting them to be well over $1,000 because the cost of gas. It looks like the prices have held steady for the last month. It may even be a little cheaper to book your ticket to Kauai now than it was six weeks ago. Here is a snap shot of round trip ticket prices that I pulled off of Obitz.

It's a Bargain

Here is the video based off of the post below. It compares the cost going to school in Kauai to the cost of living a normal life somewhere else. After watching it, I was remembering the statistic that it would be cheaper to live on a cruise ship every day than be placed in a rest home.

When you look at the numbers these guys pull out it is an incredible deal. I don't think there is anything else like this in Hawaii.

Thanks to Mike and Andrew for putting it together.

Day 1 Ministry

This Fall we have an awesome opportunity to hit the ground running in ministry. The day after students arrive is the first day of "Farm Fair". This is a huge annual event on the island of Kauai. At least 60,000 people will filter past our booth over the four day span of time. Last year the church was able to pray with over 50 people to receive Christ.

Please pray for this wonderful opportunity that God will give the Bible College students boldness to share their faith and that many people will come to Christ.
